Communication and Alzheimer's | Caregiver Center | Alzheimer's Association

Communication and Alzheimer's | Caregiver Center | Alzheimer's Association   One of the blessing that God has gifted to us is that of communication.  There comes a time when the methods may change with our loved ones as they fall deeper into a disease that has captured their minds.  It is up to us care givers to second guess and change our tactics for communication.  It can be very frustrating and a challenge to get them to comply with the basics of life.  It requires patience and sometimes it appears we are only talking to ourselves, however, we never know what is going on in their minds so choice of words is very important.  Our words are just as important to them as to others. WORDS?  WHAT does Scripture say about them?  Eph.4:29 "Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear."

Appreciating the moment: Today's blessings

Today's adventure, an hour in the billiards room.                                                                                      After todays adventure with Karl and Gary, I was again reminded of God's awesome blessing toward us in such simple, momentary, random occasions.  Whatever your eye falls on can lead you to erupt in gratefulness.  How gracious God is to allow me to minister to such a tranquil, content man, enjoying the company of two, Tom & Jerry type characters.  Every day, life is inexplicable and full of unique unpredictable manifestations which tend to encourage us on to looking for the next adventure to come.  Observing the two men having these interactive, enjoyable moments gave me great joy today.  We chuckled as Karl was in the midst of planning a great shot and was just about to hit a ball, with cue in motion, and Gary reached out and grabbed the ball which was a far reach for him.  We enjoyed watching Gary entering into the game.                       Do we ever thank God enough, for things like this?      So many times we end up stumbling our way through care giving, we are reluctant to participate or even reluctant to receive offered help.     Do we ever see it , the wonderful possibilities and potentials for enriching each other because we are looking...for what once was instead of appreciating the person in front of us?   My goal in creating moments of joy for others never fails to create one for myself.  So much for my random thoughts.  I was blessed today by our adventure even though it culminated in an ocular migraine.  Just mentioning because many behind scenes occur on our adventures that are challenging and occasional issues.

Sally Abrahms: That Wedding Bell Could Have Been Mother-in-Law Hell   Before you think about leaving grandma with dementia home to attend a wedding, read this.   It appears that in this ageist society we live in, we don't stop to consider what a blessing those with dementia can be.

Sally Abrahms: award-winning writer specializing in Aging and Baby Boomers.   Sally writes many articles for aarp.  This caught my attention as it is about care giving and music with ideas on how to use music in assisting and motivating your loved one to do something as simple as dancing to the shower or moving from one room to another.  Music can also ward of loneliness that so often accompanies caring for those with dementia.

A rewarding week

Enjoying the Stanley's back yard.  Inspecting the back side of the falls and Koi pond.

Enjoying the Koi.

Elaine feeding the Koi Cherrios.
It has been a very rewarding week as I sit here contemplating the many facets of this past week--care giving-nursery work, and gratitude searches.  I have no doubt about missing life's journeys, as the evidence of my adventures dispute that fact.  God has given me the strength and energy to do many things that have enriched my life in so many ways.  It is so easy to get caught-up in the drama of life that we fail to take notice of the small treasures along the way.                     Nature puts out a wonderful and beautiful show for us each day...don't miss it and God's mercies are new every day.  The importance of gratitude is so essential to one's JOY, forgetfulness and lack of awareness can be obstacles to reaching that goal.  If I have a tendency to repeat myself throughout my blogs, even though it may be due to forgetful tendencies, I take it as a reminder to be re-grateful for what ever it may have been.
